Changing the job is not a small step. It is a giant leap that changes your career trajectory in a significant way. You will go through various considerations before taking the final decision to change the job. There could be several reasons for you to change the job, it could be due to your personal growth, company growth, culture or so many other factors. Let’s see some of the reasons you may want to consider that it is time to quit and look for a better opportunity.
You are stagnated in your current role
If you are not growing in your current role, it is time for a change. Career growth is the continuous process of learning new things and getting more responsibilities. If you are not growing in the current role, then you are stagnated. In such a case, it is better to change the job. If you are stagnated, you will find it difficult to apply for a lateral promotion. At the same time, it will be very difficult to get a promotion to the next level. This is because you have to show how you have delivered in your current role. By being stagnated, you will not be able to show any significant results.
New opportunity has arisen in your area of expertise
If you are in an area of expertise, you will have the first mover advantage. This means that you will have some edge over others in the same area of expertise. When you have an edge, you will get opportunities that others will not get. If you have been in your job for at least 2 years, it is time to look for a new opportunity in your area of expertise. If you find an opportunity, you must take it otherwise you might not get another chance like this in the near future. You never know when the company you are working for is going to take a downturn. You don’t want to be in the company when this happens. If you are in a field that is growing, and you find an opportunity in the same field, then you should definitely take it.
There is a major mismatch between what you want to do and what you are doing now
You may be doing something that you don’t like. If this continues, you will not be happy in your job. There is a major mismatch between what you want to do and what you are doing now. If this continues, you will not be able to perform well in your job. In such a case, you should change the job. You might not be able to change the job now, because you don’t have the right credentials. You can overcome this issue by taking relevant training. And by working on your own projects in spare time to gain more knowledge. You can also network with people in the industry that you want to work in. When the time is right, you will have the credentials and the network to change the job.

Company you work at is going through major transition
When a company goes through a major transition, the entire organization is destabilized. While this is happening, the performance of the employees also gets destabilized. This is the right time to change the job. While taking the decision to change the job, you need to ask yourself if this is a one-time transition, or if it is going to happen every year. If it is a one-time transition, you can wait for it to stabilize. If it is going to happen every year, you are better off changing the job.
Your boss or the leadership is unethical and toxic
The working environment at the organization must be conducive for work. If the work environment is not conducive, it is better to change the job. You have to be careful about the decision to change the job for this reason. If you change the job because of the bad leadership, you might not get another job in the industry. This is because your references might warn the other companies about you. You can overcome this issue by keeping your references in the loop. You can do this by telling them that the leadership is bad and that you want to change the job. If you do this, the references will not warn the other companies about you.
You are undervalued and/or not appreciated
If you are not appreciated or recognized for your work, it is time to change your job. Appreciation is fuel to do more and give your best. Even after putting all that extra effort and time to deliver the best, if your company doesn’t recognize your potential or your ideas it is time to move on. Identify your potential and make sure you are getting recognized for what you are doing and given equal opportunities to grow. You should be able to see your career and professional growth in the company, if not it is time to change.
If you have been working in the same company for 10 years, it is time to change the job. Having been working in the same industry for 10 years, it is time to change the job. If you have been in the same position for 10 years, it is time to change the job. Having been in the same role for more than 5 years, it is time to change the job. If you are in the same workplace for more than 5 years, it is time to change the job.
Follow your passion, you should be happy with your work. It should be satisfying even if it is exhaustive. Always plan for the future. Make sure to keep up to speed and always keep yourself front in the competition. Work for the company by giving your best, and also make sure that you are growing professionally. If it is not what you feel, move on, it is time to change.
